Equine Lighting FAQs

LED fixtures are the best choice for horse barns due to their durability, energy efficiency, and flicker-free output. For stall rows and aisle ways, LED vapor tight fixtures mounted at 10-14 feet provide even, shadow-free illumination that holds up to moisture and dust. For open indoor arenas with ceilings above 15 feet, linear LED high bay fixtures deliver the lumen output needed to light large riding surfaces effectively. For outdoor arenas and paddock areas, high wattage LED flood lights mounted on poles or building exteriors provide reliable nighttime coverage. Aim for 20-30 foot-candles in stall areas and 50-75 foot-candles in active arena zones.

Horse arena lighting requires uniform distribution across the entire riding surface to eliminate shadows and dark spots that can spook horses or create safety hazards. For indoor arenas, linear LED high bay fixtures mounted on a grid pattern are the standard approach, with spacing determined by ceiling height and desired foot-candle levels. For a typical indoor arena with 20-foot ceilings, aim for 50-75 foot-candles at ground level with fixtures spaced 15-20 feet apart. Outdoor arenas use pole-mounted LED flood lights positioned around the perimeter to deliver even coverage without dark corners.

Yes. Horses are highly sensitive to photoperiod, the daily cycle of light and darkness, which regulates reproductive hormones in mares. Extending the light period to 16 hours per day using artificial barn lighting beginning in early winter can advance the onset of the breeding season by several weeks. A single fixture providing at least 100-200 lux at eye level is generally sufficient for a standard stall. Consistent, flicker-free LED light is preferred over fluorescent sources, which can produce subtle flicker that may contribute to stress in sensitive horses.

Pole barns are most efficiently lit using LED shop lights or high bay fixtures mounted to the structural purlins or trusses. For a standard 40x60 pole barn with a 12-14 foot ceiling used as a workshop or storage space, 6-8 LED shop lights evenly spaced will typically deliver adequate illumination. For taller pole barns used as equipment storage or agricultural facilities, LED high bay fixtures provide the output needed from greater mounting heights. Run fixtures parallel to the long axis of the building for the most even distribution, and add switched circuits to independently control different zones.

Vapor tight LED fixtures with IP65 or IP66 ratings are the right choice for wash racks, grooming bays, feed rooms, and any area subject to hose-down cleaning, high humidity, or heavy dust. These fixtures feature fully sealed housings that prevent moisture and particulate ingress, and polycarbonate lenses that resist impact better than glass alternatives. Standard shop lights and high bays without IP ratings are not recommended for wet barn zones and will fail prematurely in those conditions.

The number of fixtures depends on your barn's square footage, ceiling height, and intended use. As a general starting point, a 40x60 barn used for general storage or livestock needs at least 4-6 high bay fixtures depending on mounting height. A dedicated horse arena requires more fixtures to achieve the 50+ foot-candle levels needed for safe riding.
